A great look at a cross section of the vineyard soil. Our vineyard has typically 12″ to 24″ of topsoil with soft sedimentary rock beneath it. The sedimentary rocks, brought hear by the Missoula floods, are some of the oldest soils in the valley. These type of soils are typical of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. The vine roots dig deep into the rocks looking for moisture and nutrients and produce the characteristic dark fruit and citrus notes found in all Saffron Fields’ wines.
